But a smaller group of buyers keeps coming back to rotary vane, and Mattei is the name they come back to. So is a vane compressor actually worth it, or is it a niche technology with good marketing behind it?
The short answer: yes, for the right application. A Mattei vane machine delivers more air per horsepower than a comparable screw, runs for decades with the major components intact, and prices closer to a screw than most buyers expect. The catch is not the machine. It is the service network around it.
How a Rotary Vane Compressor Actually Differs from a Screw
A rotary screw compressor uses two meshing rotors, the air end, to squeeze air as it moves through the housing. A rotary vane compressor uses a single rotor with sliding vanes that ride against the inside of a cylinder, and because that rotor sits on bearings and turns at a lower speed, there is no gearbox and no timing relationship to maintain between two parts.
That difference drives most of what follows. Fewer high speed moving parts means less to wear and less to align. It also means the machine runs quieter and puts less vibration into the floor, which matters more than people expect in a plant where the compressor sits near a production line.

The Efficiency Case, in Real Numbers
Vane efficiency gets claimed a lot and documented rarely. Here is the comparison from the published data sheets, matched at the same nameplate horsepower and the same working pressure.

That is roughly 12 percent more air out of the same motor. Mattei's figure comes from their CAGI data sheet measured to ISO 1217, which also reports total package input power of 13.6 kW at rated capacity and 4.0 kW at zero flow.
We want to be precise about what that comparison does and does not show. Mattei publishes measured package input power, while the Schulz table publishes a nominal motor rating of 11 kW, and those are two different measurements. Comparing capacity at equal horsepower is fair. Computing a specific power figure across two differently measured sheets is not, so we are not going to do it.
Twelve percent is the number that matters anyway, because it compounds. A machine that produces the air you need on a smaller motor draws less power every hour it runs, and over a ten year service life that gap shows up on the bill rather than the spec sheet.
What Thirty Years of Service Actually Looks Like

We recently quoted parts for a Mattei compressor that is thirty years old and still in service. That is not the part that surprises us. Where a Mattei Makes the Most Sense
The clearest case is continuous duty. A compressor that runs most of the day is the one where an efficiency gap and a long component life both pay back, since you are buying hours of operation rather than a machine that sits idle between jobs.
Food and beverage manufacturing is the other strong case, and it is where we see these decisions made most often. If you are in a remote area, think carefully. Mattei dealers, distributors, and service companies are less common than they are for a brand like Atlas Copco, which means finding a technician with real hands on experience with these machines can be harder depending on where you sit. A compressor is only as good as the support behind it, and a machine nobody nearby has worked on is a risk you should price in before you buy.

For everyone else, we should be straightforward about how these deals usually go. Mattei is a specialty compressor, and the buyers who want one are typically already set on it. When we do lose one of these, it is generally to a brand we do not carry rather than on price.

At 20 and 30 HP a fixed speed Mattei lands within a few hundred dollars of a variable speed EL-AV screw, and at 15 HP it comes in below. That is a genuinely different picture than the one most buyers walk in with.
