How to choose a water separator and condensate drain
Choose the part of the job you need done
Use an EL-AV CND cyclone to remove bulk liquid water from compressed air. Use a drain to discharge the condensate that collects. If you need to treat the collected oily condensate, Mattei MCS oil/water separator uses media that absorbs lubricant. These are separate jobs, so choose by the fluid stream you need to handle.
Match the cyclone to flow and pressure
Compare the CND capacities and NPT connections below. The working-pressure range is 29–232 PSI, and a float-actuated auto drain is included. Check line flow, operating pressure and connection together; the larger thread alone will not tell you which separator to choose.

Place a CND downstream of the air receiver and ahead of the refrigerated dryer or coalescing filter. Keep its bulk-water job separate from the treatment stages that follow it. When changing separator size, check both the connection and the capacity instead of choosing a fitting first and assuming the flow rating will match.
Choose the drain mechanism and fit
For Mattei automatic drains, choose NED 12 for an external float trap, or NETD 14 and NETD 12 for timed solenoid operation. Both timed versions are 115V. BEKOMAT senses accumulated condensate and discharges when necessary, so choose that mechanism separately from a timer-controlled drain.
The page also includes EL-AV EFAD for EF filter housings and CNDSSAD, the stainless drainer upgrade for CND separators. MDSF accessories and the Anest Iwata filter element are different items again. Check the housing or separator family, electrical requirement and connection when choosing a replacement.
Common questions
Does a CND separator come with a drain?
Yes, it includes a float-actuated auto drainer. CNDSSAD is a separate stainless drainer upgrade for that family, not another cyclone separator.
Is an oil/water separator the same as an air-line water separator?
No. MCS treats collected oily condensate with absorbent media. CND separates bulk liquid from compressed air. Choose according to which stream you need to treat.
Do automatic drains all use a timer?
No. Choose between the float trap, timed solenoid and accumulation-sensing mechanisms described above. Match the exact model and electrical configuration, rather than ordering by the word automatic alone.
