Pneumatic Rock Drills

Your drilling job starts with choosing a surface or underground rock drill. Our Atlas Copco pneumatic rock drill lineup includes RH 571, RH 572, RH 658 and BBD 12 surface models, along with BBC 16W, BBC 34W and BBD 94 underground models.

We also offer BBD 15E, BBD 15ET and SRD 25 models. A1 Compressor Warehouse is an authorized Atlas Copco dealer. Compare the models below for your application.

How to choose a pneumatic rock drill

Choose for the drilling position

Start with the direction of the hole and the flushing method. BBD 12 D, DS and DCS cover horizontal, plug-hole and concrete drilling; BBD 15 is for vertical drilling. For underground work, BBC 16 W and BBC 34 W use water flushing and a pusher-leg arrangement. DSI models use air flushing.

Other choices on this page include RH 571, RH 572 and RH 658 surface drills, SRD 25, BBD 15 ET and BBD 94 underground variants. Compare the model for your drilling position before choosing by weight or air consumption.

BBD 12 TS27 lb47 CFM
BBD 15 E34 lb47 CFM

Match the hole and air requirement

BBC 16 W and BBC 34 W cover a 27–41 mm hole range. Check the drill and feed arrangement for your hole requirement, then match the air supply to that model. Do not use a surface drill's air requirement to size an underground setup.

For the surface tools in the table, you need the stated CFM at 90 PSI at the tool, plus the demand of anything else running at the same time. BBD 12 TS and BBD 15 E both use 47 CFM, although their weights differ. Check weight and air demand separately.

Match the steel and pusher leg

BBD 12 TS uses a 7/8 x 4-1/4 inch hex interface. Match the exact chuck and configuration when choosing drill steel; other BBD versions use different shanks. For an underground arrangement, choose a pusher leg matched to the drill. It lifts and feeds the tool, and is a separate accessory rather than something to assume comes with every drill.

Common questions

What rock drill bits fit my drill?

Start with the exact model and chuck dimensions. The BBD 12 TS shank above is one example; check your configuration before ordering steel for another drill.

Which handheld drill is for vertical holes?

The BBD 15 series covers vertical drilling. BBD 12 D, DS and DCS are the horizontal and plug-hole choices identified here.

Do I need a pusher leg?

Choose by the drill arrangement. The underground BBC models discussed here use matched pusher legs; surface models are a different setup. Check both the drill and the feed accessory before choosing the package.
