Anest Iwata W-100 or W-101 Discontinued? What to Upgrade To
If you have used an Anest Iwata W-100 or W-101 for years, replacing it may not have been on your list until you needed a part. Both guns are discontinued, and some replacement parts are no longer available. We typically recommend the Anest Iwata W-400, usually the W-400 LV for finishing work, because it should be fairly familiar to a W-100 or W-101 user. There is one detail to check before you order: the standard W-400 and W-400 LV do not come with a 1.5 mm nozzle.
Are the Iwata W-100 and W-101 Discontinued?
Yes. Neither gun appears on Anest Iwata Americas' current spray gun price list. You may still see some W-101/W-100 parts listed, but that does not mean the particular part your shop needs is available.
We recently worked with a furniture shop that needed a replacement fluid nozzle for its old gun. That nozzle was no longer available, so the shop replaced its spray guns and upgraded to the W-400. It is a practical example of why the status of an older gun matters: your decision can come down to one worn part, even when the rest of the gun has served you well.
What Replaces the Iwata W-101?
Iwata's catalog and our recommendation point to different guns.
For a part-number replacement, look at the WIDER1. Iwata positions the WIDER series as the successor to the W-101. Our WIDER1 listings identify the W-101 code each version replaces; for example, WIDER1-15H2G replaces W101-152G. WIDER1 comes in gravity, suction and pressure feed versions, and it is the lowest cost option in this comparison at $380.62.
For the gun we typically recommend, look at the W-400. We consider it the successor for most W-100 and W-101 users. It is a more popular gun, should be fairly familiar, and parts are typically available for it. For furniture finishing, we usually point you to the W-400 LV, the compliant, high transfer efficiency version.
Check your feed type and nozzle size, especially if you need 1.5 mm. Here is how the main replacement paths compare on our site:
| Gun | How it relates to your W-101 | Nozzle sizes we list | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| W-400 LV | What we typically recommend; compliant LV version | 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.6, 1.8 mm | $669.14 |
| W-400 | Standard (conventional) version of the same gun | 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.6, 1.8, 2.5 mm | $586.88 |
| W-400-LV WBX | Primer/sealer W-400 that ships with a regulator; the only W-400 with a 1.5 mm | 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 1.8 mm | $569.68 |
| WIDER1 | Iwata's catalog part-number replacement for the W-101 | 0.8 to 1.8 mm | $380.62 |

The 1.5 mm Nozzle Catch
This is the point we would ask a furniture shop to check before choosing a W-400. The customer we worked with had a 1.5 mm fluid nozzle on its older gun, and the replacement nozzle was no longer available. Neither the standard W-400 nor the regular W-400 LV comes in 1.5 mm, so a move to either gun also means choosing a different nozzle size.
Your options are typically 1.4 mm or 1.6 mm:
- 1.6 mm is our recommendation when the paint you spray on furniture has more in it. High solids coatings and primers are the examples we have seen in furniture shops.
- 1.4 mm is the other common choice. Tell us what you spray if you are unsure which size to choose.
The W-400-LV WBX in 1.5 mm is another option if you need to keep that exact size. Iwata makes the WBX as a primer and sealer gun, and it ships with an air regulator. We still typically recommend the regular W-400 for most shops because it is more popular and parts are typically available for it, but the WBX is worth comparing when 1.5 mm is important to your work.
Why We Recommend the LV Version for Furniture Finishing
For furniture finishing, we definitely recommend the W-400 LV. That is another reason we typically recommend the W-400 when you replace a W-100 or W-101. Iwata describes the LV as a compliant, high transfer efficiency gun that uses a low volume of air, so more coating ends up on the piece.
How Anest Iwata's Spray Gun Lineup Breaks Down
The mistake we see most often is choosing a replacement before looking at the full Anest Iwata lineup. There are basic and more advanced options, and the technology can vary within a series. When your old W-100 or W-101 needs to be replaced, start with what your shop sprays and how the gun is set up, then compare the series.
| Level | Series | Where it fits | Starting price on our site |
|---|---|---|---|
| Value | Air Gunsa (AZ series) | Iwata's lower cost line | $146 |
| Direct W-101 swap | WIDER1 | Part-number replacement for W-101 | $380.62 |
| Workhorse | W-400 and W-400 LV | What we typically recommend to W-100 and W-101 owners | $586.88 |
| HVLP | LPH-400 | Iwata's HVLP spray gun line | $747.69 |
| Premium | WS-400 Supernova | Iwata's Supernova line, the highest priced guns in this table | $924.66 |
| Touch-up and detail | LPH-80 | Small parts, touch-up, tight spots | $446.91 |
| Automatic | Automatic spray guns | Robots and production lines | Varies |

That table gives you the series, but you should also look at the build of the particular gun. Those choices can affect what comes with it and what you can carry over from your old setup:
- Gun only or gun with cup. Many W-400 models are offered either way, including versions with a PCG cup. If you plan to reuse an old cup, check its fit before ordering.
- Air flow control at the gun. Some W-400 LV builds include an installed AK-1R or AK-1B2 air adjusting valve. One example is the W400LV-144G with AK-1R at $747.69 at the time of writing.
- Built in regulator. The W-400-LV WBX ships with a regulator.
- Digital. Some setups add a digital pressure gauge at the gun. Ask us what is currently offered for the model you are considering.
How to Read an Iwata Model Number
Your old model code is useful when you call us about a replacement. It identifies the nozzle size, air cap and feed type, which gives us a better starting point than the series name alone:
- Nozzle size: the first two digits after the series. W400LV-144G is a 1.4 mm nozzle; W101-152G was a 1.5 mm.
- Air cap: the character(s) after the nozzle size identify the air cap.
- Feed type: the last letter. G is gravity, S is suction (siphon) and P is pressure feed.
For example, W101-152G identifies a 1.5 mm gravity gun. If you are considering a W-400 LV, the closest nozzle choices are W400LV-144G at 1.4 mm or W400LV-164G at 1.6 mm. Match the feed type first, then use the material you spray to choose between the available nozzle sizes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Anest Iwata W-101 still made?
No. The W-101 and the older W-100 are discontinued, and neither is on Anest Iwata Americas' current price list. If you still use one, check the parts you depend on before you need a replacement.
What replaced the Iwata W-101?
Iwata's catalog identifies WIDER1 as the part-number replacement. We typically recommend the W-400 to W-101 owners, usually the W-400 LV for finishing work, because it is more popular and parts are typically available for it. Check the nozzle size before choosing either path.
Can I still get parts for a W-101 or W-100?
Some parts are still listed, but others are no longer available. The furniture shop we worked with needed a 1.5 mm fluid nozzle that it could not replace, so it upgraded its spray guns to the W-400. We can help you look at a replacement gun if the part your shop needs is gone.
Does the Iwata W-400 come in a 1.5 mm nozzle?
The standard W-400 and regular W-400 LV do not. Their closest options are typically 1.4 mm and 1.6 mm. The W-400-LV WBX primer and sealer gun is the W-400 option that does come in 1.5 mm.
What nozzle size should I use for primer on furniture?
We recommend 1.6 mm for paint with more in it, including the high solids coatings and primers we have seen in furniture shops. Tell us what you spray and the nozzle size you use now, and we can help you compare the options.
Replace Your W-101 With the Right Gun the First Time
If your W-100 or W-101 needs a part you cannot get, the W-400 is the upgrade we typically recommend. Bring us your old model code and tell us what you spray, especially if your nozzle is 1.5 mm. We can help you compare the feed type, the 1.4 and 1.6 mm choices, and the WBX option before you choose a gun.
